Born in 1988 in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, Arunima was a national-level volleyball and football player. She had dreams of serving in the paramilitary forces and was selected for the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force). However, life took a dramatic turn in 2011 that would change her path forever.

While traveling from Lucknow to Delhi for an examination, Arunima was attacked by robbers on a moving train. When she resisted, she was thrown out of the train. She drew inspiration from other mountaineers and approached Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to scale Everest, for training. Under Bachendri’s mentorship, she underwent intense physical and mental preparation at the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation.

Climbing Mount Everest is a daunting task even for able-bodied individuals. For an amputee, it seemed almost impossible. But Arunima refused to be limited by her disability. With a prosthetic leg and an iron will, she began her expedition. After facing freezing temperatures, avalanches, physical pain, and the ever-present threat of death, she achieved the impossible. On May 21, 2013, Arunima Sinha became the first female amputee in the world to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Her achievements didn’t stop there. Arunima went on to climb six other major peaks across different continents, including Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Elbrus in Europe, Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, and Mount Aconcagua in South America.
